How do I want to live so I can be who God calls me to be?
“The most powerful choices we will make in our lives are not about specific decisions but about patterns of life: the nudges and disciplines that will shape all our other choices.” Andy Crouch
There are ancient paths that God’s people have walked which sustained their faith and nourished their daily communion with God. These spiritual practices formed a common life of ordinary rhythms, everyday practices and mutual commitments. Sometimes referred to as a “rule of life”, we seek to answer the question, How do I want to live so I can be who God calls me to be? We will discuss these spiritual disciplines; the repertoire of rhythms (regular practices that shape our daily/weekly living), relationships (intentional Christian community), and renunciations (the no’s we say which enable a stronger “yes” to Jesus. Doug has been in ministry for 48 years, and in his present position as pastor of Kanata Baptist Church in Ottawa for 38. During that time there have been exhilarating ups and spectacular downs that have spoken strongly to him of God’s overarching grace and attention to upholding his calling by the grace of God. For the last 20 years he has given himself to nurturing and raising up leaders for the next generation, mentoring and coaching with Arrow Leadership, and guiding his own congregation in the everyday adventure of kingdom life. His wife Meredith, a high school music teacher, has kept him grounded in his own walk and made fully aware of the cultural shifts flowing into our world.
The presence of three daughters, sons in law and seven grandkids brings joy as he watches the next generation steer a fresh course through the future. Give him a clear berth on Saturday mornings as he watches his favorite football club Arsenal defeat their foes and he is good to go. Add a walk, some music, a good read, and strong cup of coffee and it is even more agreeable.

Live Like That
We live in unsettling times. Some have said that issues like Covid and climate change, racial tensions and political unrest, have accelerated the already occurring change and shone a spotlight on issues the church is in need of facing. But what if these crises give the followers of Jesus an opportunity to reflect on the three most important questions everyone faces? “Who are we? How will we live? What is our purpose?” Peter, one of the disciples, answers these three questions with stunning clarity and depth and invites us to evaluate what it means to truly follow Jesus. Using three participles in just 2 verses 1 Peter 2:9-10), he helps us to reflect on our identity, our character, and our purpose. He emphasizes that we belong to God (a New Father and Family), we live like our brother Jesus, and we join the family business.
Come and join us on this journey that will stretch you, encourage you and invite you into a radical new way to Live Like That.

Hearing, Loving, Obeying
To trust God’s words and to respond in faith is at the heart of the Christian life. Paul and Sarah Williams will lead us deeper into this theme through an exploration of the Gospel of John and its relationship to every part of our lives: interior and exterior, personal and public, contemplative and active.
Paul and Sarah Williams joined the faculty at Regent College in 2005 and now live in the Cotswolds in England. Sarah is an historian. Her current book is a close study of the nineteenth century campaigner Josephine Butler in which she draws out the foundational role of prayer in Butler’s understanding of public life and social change. Paul is an economist and entrepreneur. His recent book, Exiles on Mission, insists that our work and mission in contemporary society can only be fruitful if it is deeply connected to our identity in Christ and sustained in prayer.

The Psalms as a Primer for Prayer
“I’ve always known that the most important spiritual practice is prayer; yet for me, it’s been the most difficult. In recent years, the Psalms have become a lifeline for my soul, providing practical instruction in how to carry on a real conversation with God. Using the psalms as our primary text, we’ll explore the themes of spiritual dryness, disappointment with God, theological doubt, and the daily practice of soul care. The lived experiences of the psalmists will provide us with a colorful tapestry as a backdrop for their psalms.”
Brian LOVES Barnabas! Ever since his first stay 25 years ago, he’s viewed the Keats Island paradise as a “thin space” where God’s presence feels unusually close. Since the age of 8, summer camp has been a significant part of Brian’s life. He was discipled at camp, learned to be a leader at camp, and even fell in love with the Program Director at camp! Brian and Myrna (same Program Director!) now enjoy their three kids and 7 grandkids, all who live in the Lower Mainland. Following 40 years of pastoral ministry, Brian spends his “retirement” as a spiritual director, homiletical coach, conference speaker, and artist.
